Contact partner for the region

The Regional Authority FrankfurtRheinMain is the central contact point for regional matters. In addition to land-use planning, the Authority has a strategic control-, impetus-, and coordinating function for the region. Together with our partners, we work on making the region fit for the future in the competition for smart people, green ideas, investments, and jobs. The tasks of the Authority are based on the law on the metropolitan region FrankfurtRheinMain. The following map shows the area of the Regional Authority with its 75 member municipalities.

The topics of climate and energy in the Regional Authority

The overall goal is to safeguard an environment that is suitable for human habitation and provides the natural basis for life. The requirements of climate protection must be considered in terms of precautions to counter climate change as well as measures that promote adaptation to a changing climate. In addition, the prerequisites for a conservative use of energy and the expansion of renewable energies must be created. This is also anchored in the regional planning law and the building code.

The topics climate and energy play an important role in the planning-process for the FrankfurtRheinMain region. The planning department, responsible for the regional preparatory land-use planning in the area of the Regional Authority, is currently compiling the objective sub-plan on renewable energy. This sub-plan supplements the already existing regional preparatory land-use plan with the topic of energy supply with renewable energies, in particular wind energy.

The department energy/environment and innovation

The department energy/environment and innovation in the Regional Authority is responsible for additional tasks and projects (other than formal planning) related to topics of climate protection, the energy transition and climate change adaptation in the FrankfurtRheinMain region.

Our goals are:

  • Development, strengthening, and advancement of networks and cooperations
  • Provision of information
  • Coordination of regional activities
In order to achieve these goals, we are acquiring and developing the necessary baseline data on energy consumption, energy production, and CO2 emissions. We develop and implement projects that foster a sustainable development in/of the region. This includes, for instance, the regional energy concept FrankfurtRheinMain. The concept is supposed to contribute to the energy transition in our region by considering all topics which cannot be controlled by spatial planning.

The exchange of knowledge, the networking of various actors, and the development and expansion of cooperations are the focus of workshops, events, competitions, and an exhibit which we organize together with our partners. We create publications from research and test projects (EU, Germany, Hesse, Region FRM) under project partnership with the Regional Authority on climate protection and adaptation to climate change.

The Regional Authority also acts in a consulting function for its member municipalities, is present in commissions and working groups, and issues statements. The Regional Authority coordinates regional climate and energy projects between the districts/municipalities and the EU, the Federal government, and the State of Hesse. Accordingly, we are the regional platform for these topics in the region.
